Week #4: 1 Point Perspective

Overview:

This week we covered different point perspectives in drawings so that we could create more accurate views. The task was to draw an environment with 1 point perspective.

Inspiration and process:

We started with a point with lines coming out from it to the edges of the page, acting as a stensil for how the lines would be oriented to give the sense of perspective.

For the actual drawing, I decided to try and do something similar to the corridors from the film Alien and its game Alien: Isolation as I like the retro sci-fi look of the franchise and wanted to have a go at recreating it. The below images are the images I used primarily for inspiration (I tried to get them smaller and next to each other but the image formatting on this is painful):

I ended up with this, I tried to keep the industrial sort of feel given from both the Nostromo and Sevastapol by including the exposed pipes and vents. I think the geometric repetitions of the triangle pipe openings, vents, and the octagonal corridor worked quite well both visually and as a way to test drawing perspective.

Improvements:

I think the main things that would need improving in this is the shading and the strength of the lines. The shading I intend to practice more as I do more art and have tried to do slightly with the pipes and stairs but other than that it has been left pretty much unshaded.

Secondly I would go over the lines in a solid, rulered line rather than more sketchy rough lines to give it a more polished and clean look.

From there I think colour might make it a bit better but I quite like the greyscale look at this point and would rather get shading under control first.

Overall:

Overall I’m really happy with how this turned out. I feel like I explored the topic quite well and tested some things that I felt would be awkward under the perspective like the triangles heading towards the point that had to remain regular to the other ones as they shrunk. Its by no means perfect and is mainly just a sketch at this point but I am happy with how it looks and explored the topic.
